Is it necessary to remove the engine in order to remove the transmission?

Asked by Lilli Jun 30, 2014 at 03:28 PM about the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am SE2

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car is not shifting from 3rd into 4th as it should be.  I am worried I may need to replace the transmission.  1.  Is the process of removing the transmission at home to save on shop labor a practical task for an experienced home mechanic? 2.  Do we need to remove the engine to remove the transmission?

If you have an automatic transmission, you may need to change the modulator valve. No removal of engine or trans for the job.

Trying to remove 5spd. From 03 grand am, not sure if there are anymore bolts holding to motor, I can't get trans to even budge
