Why does my 2003 pontiac grand am gas gauge only go to half a tank?

I had this problem when i first bought the car and then it would only go to 1/4
tank. so i thought it was the sending unit so i changed the entire fuel pump
and thought it was working correctly because it went up to a half a tank but
when i filled the tank it still only read a half a tank.

check the wire on the sending unit on tank ..

Mine does the very same thing, I have to keep up with the odometer when I fill up the gas tank
