is it safe to drive a 2004 pontiac grand am with the battery light on

Car starts and eveything is normal except battery light comes on.

Safe, yes. Smart, no. Unless the light is getting a bad signal, it is telling you your electrical system is discharging. That means the car is running from the battery charge and it will not be long before your car and battery die. Have the alternator checked at a local parts store.
