The service engine light came on for about a day and then went off. Do I need to have it looked at and what are the possible problems it could be? I just put new tires on the car about a month ago.

The 2005 Grand AM has two similar lights. One for the engine (SES - service engine soon) and one for the body (SVS - service vehicle soon). If the SES light comes on again, you can go to a parts store to get the engine codes read. If the SVS light comes on, check the headlights and give the gas cap a couple of clicks. If you get the SVS along with the Trac Off and Brake lights, there is a bad wheel speed sensor and a front hub needs replacement.
@tenspeed. It isn't necessarily just a front hub it could be any of he 4. It is very likely its the front due to the extra weight it carries compared to the rear but it could still be a rear.
You are correct John. There are rear wheel speed sensors. They have a much longer service life on the Grand Am.
