pontiac won't go into gear

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

After ignorantly driving on the highway in drive (not overdrive) for an hour on a hot day, with rpm's of 4500, my automatic 1990 grand prix will no longer go into gear. The shifter itself will move, and the car will start and rev, however i can't get the car to go into drive or reverse and actually move. It seems like there is some sort of connection problem in the transmission, or that maybe i burnt some bands, I'm not sure. Has anyone done this? What might be a probable diagnosis?

inspect the transmission shift wire for damage... if it is good then it could be the clutch packs.
