I am thinking of buying a pontiac grand prix 1997 with 189,000 miles on it. Asking price is 17,000. How long are the engines good for these vehicles and is the price fair.

$17,000 for a 10 year old car with almost 200k on it? Don't walk, RUN away from this one. You could buy a brand new Pontiac G6 and still have change left over for what they are asking.

I concur 110%. When I bought my last car (in 2001) I looked at consumer reports for 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix's and they were not the most reliable cars then, never mind now. The only cars that I would consider buying-- if I was broke and incredibly desperate -- with 200k miles would a a Toyota or a Honda for maybe around $1k. Why don't you go buy a used Scion TC or something like that for that much? There are a lot of halfway decent modern vehicles that you can buy with that sort of money. If you wanted to be completely impractical you could even buy a used Porsche for that much.

That is ridiculously overpriced at the absolute most it should be like $5k and that is at a dealer!!! I am sorry but if you were even considering buying that car you are an idiot and should really look at prices of cars and try to educate yourself and understand how much they are really worth. as a owner of the same make and model... i can tell you that ya the price is a little high, i would talk them down to 12.000 and for the one reason they are cheep to fix and the engine goes like stink... so much power i have 450.000 kms on mine and it still drives like a champ... people will talk shit about this car but its a great investment... and if you don't i will... infact give me thie phone number

not to sure about the price..seems high...but can talk from experience...these cars go forever...barter with price and jump all over it...hopefully this helps...

I"m a big fan of the GP's but I would check that supercharger for makin noise but formost I hope your info is wrong because that car is worth about 3,500 bucks not 17,000 I think ya got something wrong. paul

I'm an employee of GM and I can safely say that is way overpriced.If you really want the Grand Prix though you can get one for about $22K. You can see prices for the various Pontiac models at Pontiac.com. Run away from this deal for 1997 now. The engine may be good, but $17K for a car with 189,000 miles is ridiculous.

I agree with mostly everyone as far as it being overpriced but it is a great car. I have a 2000 Grand Prix with 208,000 miles on it. The 3.8 litre engine is a great engine.

Don't buy it. I recently bought a 1998 Grand Prix with 124,000 miles for $4,850. You can get a way better deal..You could buy a new car for that much.

Ok, i hope thats a typo cause that is insane. If you want a grand prix and you want to pay 17,000 then look around for a newer one thats 2006 or newer. Even if this is a typo and its only 7,000 i still would advise against it, if its 1,700 then yeah buy it, they are pretty good cars and the engines are very reliable. I have a buick lesabre with the same engine and it runs awesome, except it dont have a supercharger but oh well. Seriously tho dont buy this car at 17,000. If you want to spend that much buy a new car thats gets good gas mileage and comes with a waranty. Good luck

This car is way overpriced! The engines are great, but this car has been fed by a supercharger for nearly 200,000 miles, it has to have some wear in it. I would leave this one for another sucker!

I totally agree with everyone else. I don't think I could get $17,000 for my 2004 GTP with only 34000 miles. Pontiacs are good cars, but 189,000 miles? Please.

I have a 1997 four door GPT and love it to death. It has been a great car and has over 200,000 k on it. Of course I've had to do some work on it but it is an older car and really what car don't you have to work on. That price is way way too much I got mine for $7000. I would recommend with confidence this car to anyone, but buyer beware with any used car. If you do get this car be for warned that you need to pit premium gas it it for the supercharger. The high grade gas will keep it running great. My husband is a mechanic and also owns the same car as I.

HORRIBLE DEAL. I got mine for $7000 and it had 80,000 miles on it. You will find a ton of them out there for much lower price with less mileage. I say that car is worth maybe $1000 bucks. Aren't they around $25,000 new??? YIkes

I hope you mean $1,700 not 17000 find out if the transmision has been replaced yet I had one and it went at around 100k miles the supercharger puts alot of stress on the trans and the one they put in the 97 really wasnt strong enough if you drive it hard, with high mileage you might need to have the supercharger rebuilt soon if it hasnt already been done.

Are you sure the asking price is $17000? The price for a '97 Grand Prix should be around $3000 to $4500. The engines are good for over 400000 km. Great engines. Best engine GM ever made.

Stock, then yes, but if its been really well maintained and is heavily modified, but street legal it might be worth it. Especially if its 200k on the chassis and the engine has been rebuilt

Price is high but these clowns that are trashing grand prixs don't know anything about them. They are great cars I own two and theres no way I would listen to these guys. Minor problems here and there if you bag on your car and don't take care of it. They have been the most reliable cars that I have ever owned and I've been through a few haha stock that 97 is worth 5500 to 6500 but there are a ton of them out there that have alot of work done to them and they are easy to do more to. The people telling you they got there cars for so cheap didn't get a gtp they bought SEs' and those wwere garbage with small motors and extra weight. Both my cars are around 165000km and still running strong a few of my friends have gtps that are at 220000 and they still run strong if you take care of it, it will be the best car you've ever owned

Yah I think that's insane.I own a 2002 GTP and paid under $14,000.00 for it with only 60,000 km's on it from a dealer.It was a lease return for a new gen one and I talked to the guy who had it before me,all proper service records for it yadda yah.So bud whatever you do don't pay that much for a grand prix even if it was a GTP model one.Read my review on these cars so you can get a drivers idea of what these cars are really like.Find a better deal for this car if you really want one.

I bought a 1997 grand prix with 154000 on it and only 25k on the super charger and I only paid $1250. I see them on craigs list for about that all the time.
