Frame of Pontiac is rusted away is it fixable?
Asked by Cory Oct 27, 2020 at 09:46 PM about the 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 Dr GT Coupe
Question type: General
I have a 98 grand prix gt that has a 5 inch portion of the frame has rusted away
in right rear and it still rides and drives great with only 201k miles on it and I am
wanting to know is it fixable? I have put undercoating on it so it does not rust
more so I am interested in possibly fix it or just baby it until I can do what I need
to do so any advice is greatly appreciated thanks p.s I have to keep the car
cause I am on disability and can not afford a payment and higher insurance.

You didn't post any photos. but a body shop might be able to make a repair, and or get a donor car and cut away a section to weld to your car. Your talking about replacing metal, so welding would be required. You didn't say exactly where the hole is, so get some estimates.
Considering the vehicle is 22 years old and has over two hundred thousand miles on it, in my opinion, it's not worth fixing. Frame repairs are expensive and will exceed the value of the vehicle. Better to put the money towards a newer vehicle. Hope that helps! Jim
Thanks for your input everybody.
I changed my mind here is a pic of 3.5 inch missing part of the rusted away frame on right rear. This is only bad part of frame.
Visit your local auto body shop and get an estimate for the repair. Keep in mind that kbb.com says the vehicle is only worth about $1,194. Hope that helps! Jim
Thanks jim, like said before i am on disability and do not have a way to get another car payment so fixing is a option. It has been this way for 3 years do you think it is safe and fixable?
You're welcome. Glad to help! Since I can't see your vehicle in person I think you should follow the body shop's advice. The safety of you and your passengers are top priority. Get estimates and the advice of three different shops. The car can be replaced. You and your family and friends can't. Hope that helps! Jim
