Why does my new replaced shock/strut make a broken noise

Asked by William Mar 13, 2018 at 02:54 PM about the 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 Dr GTP Supercharged Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Ok I replaced one shock/strut in the rear, because
every single bump I hit it was making this metal
clapping sound. I paid to get it replaced. But the
next days every bump I went over it made the
sound again.  I haven’t had time to go back to the
shop. Is it doing this because I only got one done or
is it because the guy didn’t put it in right ? Also
when I back up it makes this metal scraping noise
before the fix and still does On one side. He said it’s
because the struts weren’t level. I thought it was the
brakes but he said no. Help?

First, go back to the shop and asked them to show you what they did. Maybe both struts were bad and maybe you got stuck with the apprentice mechanic.

Agree. Probably needs the other shock as well.

Like with wheel bearings and light bulbs, struts should be replaced in pairs. If one has crapped out, the other is probably close to biting the dust as well.
