Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 99 Pontiac Grand Prix. The air
conditioning condenser is making a
squeaking or squealing noise but only when
the AC is off any ideas of what might be
going on with that.

Even though it is not under load when the system is off, I would check the condition and tension of the belt. If that is good, it might be the bearings in the condenser unit.

I hate to be the one to break it to you guys, but the condenser is not a mechanical part and certainly does not have bearings or any other moving parts for that matter. If it is squeaking it is rubbing on something and probably just needs to be pried a little bit one way or the other to create some clearance. If on the other hand it is actually the compressor we are talking about then it could be bearings, or the clutch. Either way the best fix is probably a different or new compressor. It's probably not practical to service it.

Yes, compressor, not condenser. Still could be the belt.
