IS THE GM 3100 SFI V6 A NON-INTERFERENCE ENGINE ?

Asked by 17SPIKE17 Mar 28, 2017 at 01:53 PM about the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 4 Dr SE Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

THIS MOTOR IS IN A 1999 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX, & FOR SEVERAL GM MODELS IN THE 1990'S, GM PUT HOLLOW CAMSHAFTS THAT WIND UP BREAKING IN THE MIDDLE.
NOBODY, INCLUDING SEVERAL DEALERSHIPS I'VE CONTACTED, CAN TELL ME IF THIS 3100 SFI V6 IS AN INTERFERENCE, OR NON-INTERFERENCE ENGINE.
I FOUND SEVERAL AFTERMARKET SOLID CAMS AVAILABLE, BUT IF THIS IS AN INTERFERENCE ENGINE & IT BENT OR BROKE VALVES, I DON'T WANT TO WASTE THE TIME.

From what I am finding out it is a interference engine.

My 89 Pontiac 6000 with 2.8L timing chain had the chain glide break. The sheet metal broke off and jammed into the crankshaft sprocket causing the chain to slip on it. This caused the pistons to hit an open valve losing compression. Hence VAVLE INTERFERENCE .

I have a 1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme w/3100 SFI with 94,854 origanal miles and have never had an "interference problem" engine.
