For those with over about 80,000 miles on their car, what have you had to replace/fix on your Grand Prix?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My GP is a 2000 GT coupe and has 140,000+ miles on it. I bought it with 70k miles, and it worked fantastically for the first 3 or 4 years..but since then:

I've had to fix the damn wipers several times--and the passenger-side one refuses to work right no matter how many times it's "fixed"

Replaced all tires

Replaced a cracked head gasket (to the tune of about $1,900--courtesy of GM placing the head gaskets in a way that requires the very labor-intensive job of taking the whole engine out)

Replaced the radiator/coolant system

Replaced one of the belts (can't remember which one, and of which the mechanic, whom is actually trustworthy, said was the most mangled one he'd ever seen)

Passenger window went out around 105k miles---too much money to worry about

One of the mufflers is unhinged (I can't see how I caused this if I did), pounding the pavement every time I go over a speed bump

Replaced the transmission last year (whopping $2,700)

and the list goes on and on...I guess it's a fact of life with high-mileage older GM vehicles

Well sir, some of that stuff just...happens. Whether it be factory defect or whatnot. In regards to the head gasket thing, I'm going to school for auto service tech and own a 97 GP GT, and you do not have to pull the engine to do the heads. My GP has 175k on it, I've had to replace a plennum, a CV shaft, a transmission cable and various other things. All of this stuff is just proof that mechanical stuff does wear out over time. It's inevitable. But i would not trade my 97 GP, for a new Camaro SS. Bottom line. I hope this just gives you hope and encouragement. And, also pick your mechanics well...I know horror stories of guys ripping the customer off...lying and whatnot just to make more money...not the business I'm in. Take care and good luck.
