will a 3.1 grand prix motor work for a 3.8 v6

Not 100% sure I understand your question...BUT it seems like you're asking if you can swap out the 3.8L for the 3.1 L V6. I've driven both the 2000 GP with the 3.1 and the GT with the 3.8....and REALLY prefer the HP and torque on the 3.8L waay better! So, my first question would be: WHY would you want to downgrade the engine ..3.1 L makes only 175 HP? AND your car would no longer BE the Grand Prix GT. Maybe you can re-phase your question and let us know why you want to switch to begin with....trying to get better fuel economy? I doubt you'd see a sizable difference IMO.

I am wondering the same thing. Can I put my 3.1 into a newer car that had a 3.8? Same kind of car but 2 years newer.
Lilbitkristi ...Not sure what happened to the person who originally asked this question, but WHY are you looking to swap from a higher HP engine to a lower one??
I have a 1998 chevy lumina, and I'm wondering if can swap a 3.1 l v6 for the 3.8? From I can see, the engines are virtually the same size.....
yes u can do it im doing it right now but having a small problem with the security i had to use one ecm for the car witch is a 97 bonneville and another for the 3.1 that came from a 01 buick century i had to cut the front mount i mean the front of the engine out of the buick and weld it into the pontiac and only used one of the mounts in the front of the car took me 3 days just need to hook up the reference wire now finding it is the problem i dont know the color.
I don't know but I have a 3.1 and I'll swap for 3.8
