My 2000 Pontiac grand prix cranks up strong but shuts off after about 3 seconds. I had a brand new fuel pump installed and the car ran fine and i was able to drive it around for a while.

Sounds like your security system might be shutting it down although any competent mechanic should be able to diagnose that (and that doesn't explain the check engine code). Try a different key. The chip in your current key my have been damaged somehow.

I have a 06 grand prix gt 3.8 v6 It looks like a new ignition switch was put in and and a used lock cylinder installed in the switch.
