Unplug the switch. Check the electrical connector for 12vdc power - you might have to turn the key on. If you have power, check the switch for continuity with the pedal pushed. If you have power and the switch is good, the problem is downstream. Either a broken wire, or a bad ground.

brake light switch is the most logical culprit

yeah i did that and when i pushed the brake pad down, no reading. i just want to make sure i'm buying the right thing.

if taillights work more than likely not a wire issue

By far the quickest and easiest method to test the pedal switch is to just paperclip the terminals to the wires going into the switch. Do not force it into the plug just touch the metal with both ends of the paperclip. If the lights come on its the switch

If it is a problems with your brake light switch, those can be hard to locate,i know one place that might seem odd is on the steering coloum within the turn signal, where the turn signal meets the steering wheel. You might want to check there.

Daniel, all due respect, it very well could be a wire problem. The Pontiacs have a wire loom, a flat one like wide, thick tape, that has 5 wires, runs up between the headliner and steel top of car, down in to trunk---- a complete circuit for the taillights that is split in front to operate dash lights, two wires for brake lights on another fuse, left and right and is split for third brake light, and the reason for two for left and right is turn signals, they light up the same element in the bulb as the brake lights after going through flasher. Then the tail light wire is slpit in the bumper for license plate light, and the last wire is back -up lights. I still say switch, but a short in the loom or where is distributes in different directions could be the culprit. Congrats on getting "best answer", and no my friend I am not being sarsactic

The hazard switch could be stuck. Which causes the brake lights not to come on. The hazard and turn signal handle switch is connected together on the steering column..just replace that and it should work! Junkyard $30 Autoparts store $350. Pick your choice!

Similar thing is happening with my 2002 Grand Prix. Center brake light works, but side brake lights don't. Tail lights, backup, and turning signals all work, tested wires and no power to side brake lights when pressed, fuses good, brake light switch good (there are two switches under there so I've only replaced one - expensive). Power at fuse tested good. I only found one fuse for Stop lights in fuse panel behind glove box. I'm going to check the steering column flasher issue discussed here next but I'm running out of options. Can't believe a wire would just short - but maybe where they converge there is a bad connection. I know in the trunk that 4 or 5 brown wires are connected to one. It looks like my wire loom runs up the passenger side floorboard under the door kick covers. Does anyone know - there are green black and brown wires to the tail lights - which two operate brake lights? When I turn turn signals on and test green and black and green and brown, both blink my test light.

Then we are back to the switch under the petal most likely, but that is a quick easy fix

I know this is a late response, but I had the same issue. I checked the brake fuses, brake switch, etc. All were good. I found that I had over looked a fuse that controls brake stop lights but is never labeled as doing so. So if all your brake fuses are good CHECK YOUR CRUISE CONTROL FUSE. Brake switch is powered by CC, not the brake fuse.

Ok... 2001 grand prix I have the same symptom, Brake lamps don't come on but center brake lamps do. Checked all the bulbs and got new. No power to the white wire for drivers side and green wire for pas side brake lamp. All wiring looked good, fuses looked good. On the column I depressed the hazard switch to exercise it a bit. The first time I pressed it down it sorta creaked pretty bad (sounded bad) perhaps some liquid or something stickey got in it over the years. After that clicked it on and off a few more times and now, yay my break lamps now light up again like they should. Weird reason for them failing if you ask me...

Hazard light switch on steering column was sticking on mine. I had to bang on the switch, but brake lights work now. Same conditions as others described, park lights, third brake light and turn signals worked, but no brake lights.

August123456 was RIGHT ON! My rear brake lights were out (I got stopped by police which was a good thing)!! Replaced bulbs, checked fuses, and read about the hazard switch which may be stuck. Mine was stuck for some reason (never used, hot/cold temps??). Got it unstuck until hazard flashers worked. turned hazard switch off and tried the brakes. THE REAR BRAKE LIGHTS WORK NOW!!!! UNBELIEVABLE!! Papa294 and Augustin78210 were correct too. Check and Bang on the Hazard switch.

I took my 2001 grand prix in for a recall and as a courtesy I asked them to pull up codes. (Wish I hadn't) One code was P0161 brake circuit I just spent the last three hours with the service manual troubleshooting the issue. I remember my daughter said the hazard switch got stuck. Sure enough that was the issue with the stop lamps. I just fixed it in two minutes. Thank you August123456!!

The tail lights and turn signal lights worked but not the brake lights on my 59 Pontiac Catalina Convertible. After checking grounds and fuses, I discovered that brake light switch (mounted above the steering column under the dash) was not releasing correctly when the brake pedal was pushed. After adjusting the position of the switch (via the mounting bracket) the brake lights worked correctly.

Why does my brake light work but won't work while driving ??????

1 people found this helpful.

My passenger side brakebrake light and turn signal and.tail lightsend work but I onmy have 1 brake light working on drivers side. Replaced the bulbs and still not the problems. Anyone know why?

I JAZARD LIGHT WAS STUCK! YOU GUYS ARE GENIUS AND I LOVE YOU! I had the same issue! Grand Prix, all other lights worked including highmount but brake lights out. Went and got estimate--multifunction switch replacement --$800-- went home, cried, read this forum...hit the hazard button and it was kind of jammed in there. Set up a mirror behind my car and tested the brake lights again. Voila! I can't believe Midas did not check my hazard lights before telling me I needed this replacement at $800!

Someone said: "....this maybe a late response..", but no such thing. This is January 2020, and I have the exact same problem, 2002 Pontiac GP, brake lights not working(L&R), but 3rd light was. Because of this post I was able quickly figure out what it was. It's the "Hazard light switch", on top of steering column. Mine button has no movement, meaning if I need to turn my hazards ON, I will not be able to. Still go to figure out way, but got the brake lights working... Thanks you all.

My hazard switch was the reason of my brake lights problem. THANK YOU ALL! YOU GUYS ARE GREAT!!!
