How do I get my 2001 Pontiac grand prix out of park?

Asked by Mary Nov 14, 2014 at 10:39 PM about the 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I started my car and engaged the break to
release park and it would not budge. Is
there a way I can fix this myself?

It's most likely your shift lock solenoid that went bad. Refer to this video for help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XBPL9v02WQ

Next to the shifter there is a button or small tab you can pry off, inside there is a button, push down on button (I needed a long screwdriver to reach it) and it will release the shifter every time. I did this for the last four years of owning my Grand Prix. Pain in the arse but at least no one could steal my car.
