Can't Turn Car All the Way Off

Asked by AriesV6 Dec 22, 2020 at 02:38 PM about the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix GT Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I can turn the engine on and off.  The key slides in and
out, however when I turn it off, it stays on in accessory
mode.

I can't seem to turn the car completely off.

Look at the bottom of the steering column directly under the ignition lock. You should see a hole. Use a small screwdriver or similar tool and push it up in the hole. There's a solenoid in there that prevents the ignition lock from going to the off position if the shifter is not in park. At least that's what it's supposed to do. What usually happens is the wiring harness in the center console develops a bad connection because it rides back and forth with the shifter. When this happens the solenoid in the steering columb is not energized and the ignition lock will not go to the off position. The hole in the bottom of the steering column is the emergency release. It's also possible that the solenoid itself is bad. So some diagnostics are required to determine which part is bad. Hope that helps! Jim

I agree with Js. It's most likely a problem in the wiring. Fairly common problem.
