Good luck, if you're just starting out most shops are looking for 5 yrs minimum in shop experience. You will most likely need to go to an oil change place and if you haven't taken am automotive course for school then getting your ASE certifications will be difficult. You pretty much need an awesome resume or know someone who has alot of pull.
It's a very expensive business to get in to. you would need at least 5 grand in tools and a decent box. the more schooling you can afford the better. most automotive schools like lincoln tech & wyotech cost about 20 grand ,you can contact them for more info on that. Or if there are any schools or programs in your area that offer ASE training is good also . Like John says start in an oil change shop and go to school at night in about a year you'll be taking the test for ASE certification. good luck. one other thing buying tools never ends !
try us army and become a motor pool mechanic.........
for 2 reasons, will will get experience, and businesses are looking to hire hire vets..........downside you have to commit 4 to 6 years
Omg even when you buy all the necessary tools you take one step onto a Mac or Snap-on truck hauling $250,000 in tools and you want more, then you get a credit through them and its over. You finally get all the awesome tools you don't need but really want and pay off the bill and more cool stuff comes in and new stuff gets put on vehicles needing more specialty tools.
