Coolant Leak (Constant)

Asked by Vi08 Jan 18, 2020 at 08:46 PM about the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Would I still be able to safely drive my car with constant coolant leak if I
continually added coolant to the reservoir keeping it within the limits?

You can, but you will need to be diligent. Have the leak fixed at your earliest convenience.

best to find and fix the leak if it is simple. u are running on luck.

The leak looks like it is coming from the top side of the motor. So, would the be a front head gasket leak? I've never had this trouble in the summer just now in the winter. It seems yo have stopped for the moment, but I did see coolant at the top, as I previous mentioned.

Intake gasket or head gasket are possibilities. If its stopped leaking for the moment and assuming the system is still full, means the leak may be fairly small. Try adding one or two units of Bars Leak to the system. It works well and won't harm your cooling system (don't listen to the haters, they don't know what they're talking about) and it may well save you from having to fix the problem properly ever. I had the same situation with my '03 GTP and I got another 5 years out of the car without touching the cooling system or changing any gaskets. If it weren't for that unfortunate incident with the Freightliner, it would probably still be going strong.

Mine leaked from around the thermostat fitting. Hoses are push on type onto plastic fittings. These had cracked and leaked coolant that hits engine and evaporates so they are hard to detect. Had to keep filling overflow tank. Cheap and simple to replace with metal replacement parts.
