Overheating

Asked by GuruX85BZ Nov 08, 2018 at 10:23 AM about the 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2005 Grand Prix GT 3.8 non turbo. So I just changed the radiator over the
weekend. Poured in a radiator flush cleaner and water afterwards. I ran car
normally short distance for 3 days to cleanse system. During those days I had
"No" problems. Flushed radiator, installed new coolant and thermostat. Now
just by warming up engine temp. Gauge reads "Hot"!  I started engine with
radiator cap "off" and thinking I would need to top off coolant but radiator
coolant pours out?!
No other leaks noticed. I read an earlier post about bleeding thermostat ?
Again prior to installing new coolant and thermostat I had No Problems!
Thank you in advance for any help..

You may have trapped some air in the system that is causing a blockage and no circulation. Not sure about the configuration of your GP but try parking the car with the front end higher than the car body and let it sit for a day or so. You can also try some methods to "burp" or purge the system and get any air out.

Story for late response, long work day! Anyways, 1st answer yes anti freeze is only in system. 2nd - I tried airing out through screw on thermostat housing but it's still burping out the radiator cap end. Yes I aired out with cap off about 3-4 times before I set screw and put radiator cap back on. I let engine run and it slowly heated up to high. I was thinking of installing "old" thermostat and bleeding again?! I'm just perplexed about the problems now versus "NONE" before I started???

First of all, "I truly appreciated" the help on what I thought was a simple repair! Since I don't get home till sunset I'm going to attempt flushing this weekend! Looks like I'll be picking up another supply of anti freeze (50/50 of course!) and hopefully this will do the trick?! Thanks again all !!!!

The funnel apparatus ( I ended up making my "Own"!!) didn't want to spend the $40 and up especially if only using 1 time. But hopefully to some the link above will help others, thanks again to all for your support!
