Look and see if your radiator cooling fans are coming on when it's reached full temperature. They should also come on with the A/C and Defrost functions.
Also, have the coolant temp sensor checked for proper operation.
my 1999 grand prix, temperature gauge goes all the way to hot when the car is first turned and stays there until the key is turned off
