Overheating

Asked by mommalis Oct 05, 2018 at 04:38 PM about the 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GT

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Our car started to run a little warmer then
normal and would overheat when parked
and running. We changed thermostat which
didn't help as we figured out the fans were
not turning on. We changed the switch for
the fans and bled the cooling system. The
car is still running hot and the transmission
fluid gets up to 213 making the tranny shift
hard. We replaced the waterpump and the
radiator cap bled the system again and it is
still running hot is there something we are
missing?

How are you bleeding air from system ? Suggest bleeding air from system like this remove cap from overflow tank fill with antifreeze to full mark leave cap off and start vehicle and let idle you will notice level in tank start to rise this is normal once thermostat starts to open level in tank will drop add more antifreeze to full mark then put cap back on.

It sounds like air trapped in the system to me too. Sometimes helps to drain and refill with the car parked facing uphill. That seems to allow the air to come up and out of the system more easily.

Its not overheating anymore. The only problem now is that the transmission oil gets super hot in town while driving around making the car shift hard. We are going to put on a aftermarket fan to see if that helps it out.

I'm curious about how you know what the temperature of the transmission fluid is.

It has a digital reader on the dashbord that tells you the temp of the transmission fluid what direction you are going and the outside temp among other things.

i didn't know that feature even existed. Wish I had that on my car. Anyway, did some googling and your transmission is way too hot. Aftermarket fans are not going to solve the problem. There is something wrong with your transmission and the sooner you get it to a shop and have it evaluated and fixed the better are your chances that you won't have to have it rebuilt, or buy a different car.
