Engine whine

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Whenever the engine runs, it has a whine
coming from somewhere in the
belt/pulley area. Turning the wheel does
not change the whine. Only increasing
rpms causes it to change. I thought it
was the water pump, so I replaced it. Still
whines. Now it sounds like it could be
either the power steering pump(fluid is
full) or the pulley at the top of the
coolant surge tank. But it also sounds
like it could be under the plenum. I
cannot find on any engine diagrams
what the pulley at the top of the surge
tank is/does. Any ideas what this whine
might be?

First thing that comes to mind is the power steering pump but your observations have ruled that out. Alternators whine while under load and get louder and faster with engine RPM's. That's normal. Transaxels can whine if low on fluid. I think your engine might have a belt driven supercharge which moves a lot of air out the waste gate at times. I really wouldn't be too concerned if it runs okay.

The motor is not supercharged. It is an LS4 5.3 V8. The whine started maybe 2 weeks ago and it is abnormally loud. My first thought was the tranny, but the whine is toward the front of the motor and I just replaced the tranny filter and installed a shift kit in it about 5 months ago. The tranny shifts fine and the car runs fine, but I can't bring myself to drive it until I solve the whine issue. May just have to take it to the shop and let a mechanic check it out.

Here's a link to a short video to illustrate the sound it makes- https://youtu.be/2uqp2sBPrp0
