PVC VALVE LOCATION

Asked by llrowley Nov 28, 2010 at 10:00 PM about the 2003 Subaru Baja AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am told by the dealer it is on top of gas tank, it cost 3 hrs test to locate a EVP P0457 leak, and $250.00 to fix.  In my day the PVC was under $4.00 and located on top of the valve cover with a 5 minute switch out.

Dealer is wrong on the location - It screws into the intake with one hose going to one of the valve covers. HOWEVER - this will not cause a EVAP P0457 - First step if not already done is replace the gas cap ... Reset system and see if it returns If it returns then you will need to have a technician smoke the system for a gross leak in the EVAP system front to rear Should be easy to locate with the proper equipment. These also have a problem with the filler tube rotting out and may need replacement Good Luck

PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valves are always located on the valve cover or the intake ducting in some rarer cases. There is often an emssions valve called a purge valve (or proporational purge solenoid) located on the top of the gas tank or near it. This may be what they are talking about and the names got mixed up. This valve malfunctioning would cause an "EVAP" leak (leak of the Evaporative emissions system). Hope that helps. Cheers.

Thanks for the re-affirmation. Seems that the dealer and I had a dislexic moment in the spelling of PCV

Thanks for the confirmation. Seems the Dealer and I had a dislexic moment in the spelling of PCV and it really was located by the smoke (and mirrors) test after a very long time. We shared the 3 hours cost.
