Swapping 2001 Outback 2.5L into a 2002 Impreza 2.5L

Asked by Daniel Dec 04, 2015 at 10:51 PM about the 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5 TS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a jacked up engine (not sure just yet what the issue truly is) in a 2002
Subaru Impreza 2.5TS.
Would a 2001 Outback 2.5L engine swap over nicely?
Does it swap at all?

My older brother is quite car saavy so doing an engine swap is no problem but
I don't know if an '01 Outback will swap into a '02 Impreza 2.5TS.

Can anyone help?

It probably will, but before you start spending time and money check the emissions laws in your State. Many States do not allow an older engine swap. Must be same year or newer

I live in Kansas and I don't believe there are any rules about engine swapping. Kansas does not require emissions testing either. So besides the legality you think it would swap over nicely?

No promises, I think it will. But I am not a Subaru expert. Try some Subaru forums, register and ask the guys that know for sure. Try: http://forums.nasioc.com/

Yes, it will work. Your brother may have to swap over an EGR tube or something, but it's otherwise a direct swap. I'd inspect the donor motor for clean head gaskets and REPLACE THEM NOW IF NECSSARY, as this is a high failure rate item on the 2.5i. Have fun. Ern

I recently traded a 08 Kawasaki ex250 streetbike for a 2000 outback sport awd with ej22 wrx swap but shes got a knock and I wondering if I can fit the awd 2.5rs motor and trans into mine with little to no problem preferably. Then I want to upgrade a few things and turbo it. If I had the money yeah I'd buy a turbo motor but it is what it is>_< Literally any advice to keep my motor going? And what things would be good to replace every so often??

Then how can I get more out the motor I guess? And should I see how bad the damage is on the parts car that supposedly only front driver suspension got damaged in a rally cross practice same year car but Mines ej22 and donor car is a impreza rs, the still learning everything as I go with this but I'm not to worried lol pink slip:)

Yes, the motor will fit, as most Imps of that era had the 2.5i motor. Be sure to swap the ECU and any related EGR/exhaust stuff, inc proper O2 sensors. It's been a while.... You can NOT find any more power anywhere with this setup that's even remotely durable. Don't bother with CAI nor freer exhausts, as air management is already ample. If the 2.5i is out and there's ANY staining of coolant or oil on the HG seams I'd go ahead and upgrade to the newer triple-ply HGs after having a machine shop check the heads. Replace the t-belt with idler and adjuster pulleys at the same time. Use the latest iridium plugs and you might be ok for another decade. Personally I'd use a 2006+ 2.5i in order to get VVT, but that's not a big deal.
