my 2006 chevy cobalt keep causing the battery to swell and then not charge

when a new battery is put in it runs fine for a while . but shortly the battery
overheats and swells and looses its charge...then wont recharge

It sounds like you have an alternator problem. Sounds like it is overcharging the battery, ruining the battery. The voltage regulator in the alternator would be the culprit.
