95 legacy, center heat/air vent that controls airflow into the cab is jamming at one point

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the vent gets stuck at one position. the actuator is ok, goes to all 5 positions. With the
actuator removed, I can move the plastic linkage that operates the vent door by hand,
and I feel the place where it gets jammed. I can get it to move past the tight spot, but it's
too tight for the actuator to do it. Any guess what to try next?

I think I might have to pull the dash out ( and drain the coolant ) to get enough access to the heater box with the vents in it so I can mess around with the vents and linkage. I don't think the linkage is causing the problem. I'll have to wait till I can set aside a whole day for this job, it looks kind of time consuming.
