If the dimensions are the same, the fuel and exhaust come up in the right places...honestly do not see why not.~
you'd have to wire in a couple extra sensors for your wiring harness but over all it should work.
Making the DOHC engine work with your car will be far more of a pain than finding another SOHC engine. All of the non turbo 2.5 DOHC motors Subaru made are phase 1 motors, while your SOHC is phase 2. All the sensors are different, as is the ECU. You would have to go through a complete wiring harness merge. Your best bet would be to either use the short block from the DOHC provided that's what's wrong with your SOHC, or to find another SOHC engine to drop in.

In my opinion, swapping your SOHC engine with a DOHC engine would not be a good option, as it may not be fully compatible with your Subaru Model. Instead of swapping it to a different engine, which could be costly and painful, I would recommend buying a used engine at a cheaper price. If you need more information about compatibility of your Subaru outback model, check some online tips at http://www.hiperformer.com/engine_basics, which could definitely help you to handle your engine swap smartly.

yes. I agree with Melvinlowery...kinda silly! just get one that has it instead...nothing so unique about the car that another better car couldn't satisfy~

Would you be able to swap the DOHC block with the SOHC block? If they are both EJ25 blocks, I would see no difference.
