Timing belt

Asked by raver Dec 07, 2010 at 06:25 AM about the 2000 Subaru Outback Limited Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 2000 Outback Limited Wagon with 171k for $1800. The previous owner was a second owner. He says that during the time he owned it he never changed the timing belt. How do I inspect the timing belt to know if it should be changed? I know Subaru recommends changing it every 80k.

If in doubt, get it changed. Much cheaper to do that than repair the damage when a belt snaps!

just get it replaced. there's not much way to check it on a Subaru without opening it up the same as you would to replace it.

I got my 2001 Subaru outback for $950.00 with 187000 miles on it the first thing I did was have the timing belt, pulley, water pump and cam seals changed out I did not know the maintenance history of the car and I also changed out the valve cover gasket the total came to around $750.00 for me it was a lot of money but I am glad i got it done
