Engine swap- 2002 Impreza into 2001 Outback?

Asked by firecog Jul 27, 2014 at 03:04 PM about the 2001 Subaru Outback Base Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 outback, 2.5, manual, 188K, the engine went out.

I found a good deal on a 2002 Impreza 2.5 DOHC, it has the turbo heads and manifold, but no turbo. The guy I bought it from said they are basically the same engine and a swap would be no problem. Like an idiot I believed him. Took out the old one, went to put it in and realized it isn't going to work.

Any suggestions or ideas ?

If it's the turbo motor it wont work right without a turbo and even if you got a turbo for it your ECU wont be able to run it, sell it and try to find the proper motor.
