Need power outlet for accessories

Question type: Car Customization

I have a 2001 Subaru Outback Limited. In the owner's manual, it warns that the cigarette lighter outlet is designed only to be used with a Subaru brand cigarette lighter, and is NOT to be used as a power outlet. Is it possible to replace this with a regular 12-volt power outlet that I can plug my portable GPS (and other accessories) into? Would re-wiring be necessary? This model has heated leather seats; there are 2 switches for the heaters on the fron of the console, where the power outlet is on other models.

Agreed, it's easy to mess things up on newer cars by monkeying with the wiring. If you do have this done, have a Subaru dealer do it.
