2002 Subaru Outback Shifter Stuck will only engage in 3rd & 5th gear

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the clutch in my 2002 Subaru Outback, 2.5L 5speed.  Everything is back in place but I can only get the shifter to go into 3rd & 5th.  What am I overlooking?

Did you replace the throw out and thrust bearing when you replaced the clutch? There's a lot of parts in a manual transmission that can go wrong. Could also be a synchronization issue, I imagine you checked all that?

Both bearings were replaced. In checking around, it's looking like a synchronization issue but can't find info to check or correct. Suggestions?

How many miles are on your car? Do you really want to keep this and invest all this time and money? I imagine you are doing all of this yourself and have the expertise to tackle this. I had an old 1970 VW years ago and needed to have the entire transmission rebuilt. What I discovered is that if I hadn't done the entire job, it would have been just another weak link that would have failed. So, if you want to either rebuild or get a remanufactured transmission, that would be my advice. It's expensive, but, if you know what you're doing, you'll save money on the labor. See this link, and good luck. http://etereman.com/blog/transmission-care/remanufactured-vs-rebuilt- 4-reasons-why-a-reman-trans-is-your-best-option
