Now that I've had coffee I'll be less snarky.... It's the case that ANY visual aid is safer if in direct (on-axis) view of the driver. But that competes with resolution requiring real estate for capturing info immediately. Rather than spend many hundreds installing an Alpine or Pioneer NAV in the center console WAY off axis I'd suggest you do what I did first in my very fast custom Miata, which is to buy a cheap 6" Garmin and mount it right next to the upper dash pod. It's even easier to do in OBs given the larger real estate available. My wife and friends still prefers Siri and Waze for auditory prompting, but i prefer maps, despite they're added distraction. Many customers over the years have asked me about adding a NAV into their Subie, but I've always demurred, as the OE version is underperforming, and even the nicer aftermarket rigs aren't as good as a cheap Garmin...and of course are more dangerous. My wife's G37s has fancy OE NAV, but, again, the Garmin, Siri or Waze are much better. There's also no way I can condone using an earpiece while driving...even asymmetrically.

You can use a navigation app on a smart phone or an ipad. Get a holder to place the device where you want it.
