Last summer I noticed the ac would quit working and when I turned it off and waited a bit it the ac would work again. Then a few months back the engine light came on and never went off, not blinking, so my brother just reset it. Now the engine light is NOT on and after the ac started not working I noticed the engine gage was going into the H and red zone. I have over 26 miles to get back home, is this safe to drive? Should I add water to the radiator?

You should get the CEL codes read to know what is going on. Check the coolant level but you may need to service the cooling system.

It's a 2004 and 13 years old...My suggestion is to have the entire cooling system evaluated for possible replacement of old failing parts. Be sure to use Subaru original equipment, radiator, thermostat, check water pump, etc. Otherwise, you risk overheating and ruining the engine. Good luck.

Aftermarket cooling system parts work just fine and will save you a lot of money. The only thing you might want to buy from Subaru is the thermostat.
