There is more than one set of marks on a timing belt as I have found out. Make sure you have the correct marks. I had to look up the belt tooth count for my Subaru to make sure I was using the correct set of marks. There is also more than one mark on the main pulley, make sure you use the correct one. The XT has an interference engine so make sure you get it right or you will bend valves.
When you lign up the main pulley, make sure piston #1 is at TDC

I thought I was. Possibly was not. How can I be sure?
The tricky part is after u tention the belt, make sure the marks are still ligned up. U probably had it right til u applied yentio on belt, that usually throws it off a tooth.

Will the piston be up or in the middle of the bore?
Piston should be all the way up and no, I don't know any Rodney. I live in LA
