When you put the gear shifter in gear, does the dash state what gear you're in or stay in park? If it's still in park, your transmission linkeage bushing has failed. $5 part, I actually keep a spare with me just in case. Common problem.

There is a shift switch lock that is electrical and connected to the shifter handle mechanism if you remove the center consol to expose the actual mechanism. This really sounds like this could be a possiblity. If it fails then when you shift into drive or reverse it will not trigger it to put the car into gear. It is basically a safety mechanism that was installed to keep the truck from accidentally slipping into gear I believe. Worth a shot to research more. Hope that helps! GLTU.
