my friend owns a suzuki side kick 1998 manual and the shifter isnt going into second gear.when turned off you can go through gears.what repairs would be needed to fix thank you

Replaced fuel filter, plugs,cap,rotor. Can rev to 3000, smooth. Under load (driving) seems to miss/chug/hesitate. No backfire.
