can a stereo from a say 2005 four runner fit into my 1992 four runner?

Your best bet would be to go with an aftermarket stereo, adapter harness, and adapter faceplate. It's not worth spending the money for a newer factory radio which will likely still have less options and power than an aftermarket stereo which will be cheaper and easier to mount up.

although the 4runner has a double din in the instrument planel, the stereo from the newer toyotas is much two wide, i installed a sony and then ungraded to a kenwood and its great, an after market stereo would be more convinient

An 05 factroy unit is huge and a 92 hole is not. Just go to crutchfeild.com or your toyo dealer

yes any radio will fit...i went to halfords and bought a wiring kit for toyota to clarion for about £15. it plugs into your existing stereo wiring loom then the other end onto new radio!!!! easy peasy!!! good luck
