1992 4Runner Oil Pressure

Asked by Shawn Jun 05, 2021 at 01:45 PM about the 1992 Toyota 4Runner 4 Dr SR5 V6 4WD SUV

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently purchased a 1992 4Runner
4WD 3.0 with 145k miles. When I crank
it the oil pressure is good at idle. When
I start driving down the road, the
pressure drops.

What is the oil pressure spec at idle? An old rule of thumb as far as oil pressure, 10 psi for every 1k rpms. I don't have oil pressure specs for your vehicle. Sometimes you can use analog gage in place of oil pressure sending unit, just to double check oil pressure. If you think oil is getting too thin when it warms up, you could try heavier oil? Is this a hi mileage engine? Usually the pressure drops at idle because the oil pump slows down and oil light comes on, goes off when you speed up. good luck

I've kept a check on the oil levels and it's not using any so far. I had changed it with 5w30 full synthetic. I've heard that lighter weight oil could show a decrease in pressure. I just thought that it's weird that the pressure is higher at idle than driving down the road.
