Can I operate my power steering pumps reservoir with out a filter?

When I bought it I replaced
the power steer pump cause
it was pouring fluid out the
back and I noticed the filter
inside the reservoir had a
hole poked through so I dont
knw if the pump was bad
before or after this
happened.

yes early models had no fltr. hole poked to ad fluid in hurry when leaking, now ok just don;t drop any crud in reservoir
