4runner repair or sell

Asked by Greg Feb 23, 2020 at 10:22 PM about the 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5

Question type: Car Selling & Trading In

2004 4 runner has master cylinder problem that likely requires $2000
replacement part (any different ideas on fixing that problem?).
280,000 miles. Transmission is good so far. Considering the cost of master
cylinder fix, potential transmission problem, and the number of miles on the
car... better to spend money on master cylinder and wait to see IF
transmission goes (and if both go then the $4000 in repairs... but car good for
how many more years with no car payment) OR sell now before repairing ??

brake gets soft sometimes.. pushes in deeply, then after released works normally. Its sporadic. Ive seen the part online, a mobile mechanic told me on the phone 2000ish, and the garage where the car was diagnosed told me the same. something about "special" master cyl tied into abs with a booster

OEM is expensive, I would shop around or buy a used one. Get another opinion.

Rockauto.com has your master cylinder listed for $970 plus shipping. Ask if the old one can be rebuilt. Or sent out to be rebuilt. I don't see anything special about it! Any explanation as to why it's so expensive? Hope that helps! Jim

To answer your question I personally wouldn't put that kind of money in a 16 year old vehicle with nearly 300,000 miles on it! My 03 S10 Pick Up has 296,000 miles on it and if something major goes wrong with it, it's gone! Hope that helps! Jim

Maybe a kit with new rubbers will fix the problem.

I never like advice that includes rubbers #( the explanation i have received is the part comes with abs attached? and a booster? I was thinking just replacing the o rings (ok, rubbers) would be good, but i am not that capable so... a second/ third opinion seems in order but i thought some advice from here would be good thx

The one I saw on Rockauto.com is just the master cylinder. No ABS assembly or power booster. Looks like a plain old master cylinder without the fluid reservoir to me. I honestly can't believe it's that expensive. I work for Napa, I'll check it in our cataloging tomorrow. I'm sure it will be more expensive than Rockauto.com but maybe I can get an explanation for the price! Jim

Well I checked our Napa cataloging today and we have absolutely no listing for your master cylinder! The only thing that comes up is a master cylinder bleeding tool! Sorry about that!! Jim
