When I turn the steering wheel either way it grabs and releases. I've already replaced the rack n pinion and it worked for one day,then right back like it was.

no,it looked to be pumping find.I can see the fluid flowing in the reservoir. a friend said that the joint in the steering wheel shaft might be bad????

Well anything is possible. The '97 has a ton of complaints with the steering. Didn't notice anyone listing a faulty steering knuckle. http://www.arfc.org/complaints/1997/toyota/avalon/steering/problem.aspx
