how do i know if i have a bad alternator isbad on my 2000 avalon ?

One way you could test is with a digital multi-meter set on DC volts, and see what the voltage is on the battery when the car is running. It should show 14.5 volts. Otherwise you can go to a shop and they can do a quick test on the charging system.

what is it doing or not doing??? yes as above...but might only show 12.8 untill you bring up the rpms to around 3000
