Gas mileage / knock sensor

Asked by Daniella Feb 25, 2017 at 07:49 AM about the 2000 Toyota Avalon XLS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi! So I just bought my 2000 Toyota Avalon
XLS and the check engine light came on.
They said it was the knock sensor but that it
could wait a little.  Then I started noticing
that my car would go from 1/2 tank up to
3/4 of a tank with out me putting gas on it.
Then I drove to another town on a highway
for about 3-4 hours . I started with a full tank
and the needle didn't drop as much as I
thought it would. It only went down to a little
lower than 3/4 of gas.
Is that normal for a floating fuel gauge
sensor?
If not, does that have to do with the knock
sensor?

Nothing to do with the knock sensor. Best keep track of how much gas you put in, start checking the mileage. And no it is not normal for the gas gauge to go up unless someone is messing with you and is putting some more gas in the tank. When the gas gauge rose up to 3/4 did it stay there and drop when you used the car?

No, bad gas mileage is normally from a clogged catalytic converter and or a tuneup needed
