It could be a few different things going on. The starter solenoid may not be engaging fully causing the starter gear to not mesh properly with the flywheel. The fly wheel, and/or the starter gear may have chipped or broken teeth. It could be an alignment problem with the gears.. Bottom line is you will need to get under the car to inspect what is causing the grind.
