ECT means Electronically Controlled Transmission. It's essentially a power button. If you need a little more ooomf it will give it to you. I think it does it by slightly changing the gear ratios so that it stays in a gear longer. There really is no good reason to use it unless you need to get somewhere fast, but even then you probably won't have time to reach down and push a button. Also it will reduce your fuel economy if you use it.
Thank you for your explanation, have wondered what that ECT button was for and since I now can ask Google I found your answer, was 10 years ago though it answered my questions, as my dear Mom always loved to say "better late than never"have a 1994 Toyota Camry XLE V6, love it, it has 280,165 miles on it and still running strong
