1993 Camry DX 5 speed manual

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I was driving on the freeway at about 60mph in 5th gear. Suddenly dropped out of gear. I
still have 1-4th gear available. What could cause that?
Thanks!

OK, IT JUST POPPED OUT OF GEAR? If that happened, it's likely transmission failure.

No, didn't pop out. bad description. 5th gear just stopped working. Engin raced and I could shift into 4th and keep going. when I shift into 5th gear it's like the clutch doesn't grag.
OK , so, you depressed the clutch, shifted into 5th smoothly, let out the clutch and it just spins?
I'm afraid you're going to have major transmission work on your car. How many miles and what kind of condition is the car in? Have you considered just trading it in on a later model. It's a 93, and over 20 years old.

No, I was driving and it just dropped out of gear. Wont re-engage when I try 5th gear. All the others work. It has 340,000 miles. No problems until now. But yes, it is old,

I seem to recall this is a common problem on this tranny when the oil in the tranny gets low. The 5th gear set does not get enough oil. A good tranny Mechanic should know how to fix this problem without removing the trans. The problem is ....are parts still available? You might want to call a few junk yards and see if a tranny is available. Price to fix? Might be more than the value of this vehicle.
Only 340,000 miles? What are you complaining about? You're right, this car is not worth fixing, time to get a new car.
my camry has 522,000 it was beat its whole life #still rips
