Just fixed the same problem in my car -1996 Toyota Vienta. The problem was the wires in the boot that go to the reverse lights in the boot lid. The opening and closing of the boot causes the wires to fail. I cut the wires and put in new little extensions - problem solved! Look for the wiring loom on the drivers side boot hinge that goes up into the boot lid. Open the loom to expose the wires for a good length and check them.
