My car goes forward and has no hard
shifting but in reverse it goes into reverse
but it dont go anywhere. If you rev up the
engine a few time while in reverse it goes
back what could that be. Because everyone
is saying buy a new transmission and i
would hate to give up and it was something
easy to fix. Please help.

Usually the reverse is first to go in the tranny, some will run along time like this ans some will have the others gears lost over time, but yes you will have to replace or rebiuld it.

There is something you can try with no promises but add some Lucas Transmission Stop Slip if you have not changed the transmission fluid and filter in awhile also change then add the Lucas. Like I said no promises but it is worth a try.
Thanks guys i will give it a try. That is much cheaper than a new transmission.

I don't know if this will help or not, but I have a 1983 Dodge Ram automatic that reverse went out on, and after talking to several shops (some of which were clueless or gave me totally wrong answers) came across two that indicated the same thing which was relatively simple, and FIXED the problem without having to replace the transmission. They said it could be a clogged or partially clogged fluid line going through the radiator for cooling... and that's all it was! After removing the radiator and laying it flat on a bench, I used compressed air to blow it out, then filled the line with spray carb cleaner and let it soak, drained it, blew it out a second time, repeated the carb cleaner soak and blew it out again. Then I filled with atf fluid to soak out the carb cleaner and drained that, and by the way the quantity to fill this part of the line is very little. Then, with the radiator reinstalled, topped up the fluid, and reverse was back! yea! and it's been over a year and it it still working great. I did give the tranny a fluid change with new filter afterwards, too.
