I have a 95 Toyota Camry LE with 294,000 miles. For a while now when car is in park or neutral, the idle fluctuates from a low of 500 rpm to 2000 rpm. In R, D, 2, 1 the car idles at 1500 rpm.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I replaced the Idle Sensor, Checked all tune-up related items? Car runs and drives ok,
other than the idle, and the obvious air/fuel mixture issues due to the idling causing the
ECU to stay confused, Car always starts, and acceleration is good. No stalling. But also,
at about 40 mph, it bucks like trying to change from D to OD, but it's not doing that. I
cruise at about 43 mph, with no foot on pedal? Gas mileage is 10 miles to a gallon.

Possibly an intake manifold and or vacuum leak. Can do a smoke test on the intake to see if you have a leak or use carb cleaner around the mating surface to the cylinder head, will get a idle rise if there is a leak.

19 years old, near 300,000 miles, I hesitate to offer a diagnosis or solution. The Camy is a fine, better than fine, above average life expectancy car. But 300,000 is about near what can be expected, and the reason I say I hesitate to offer a possible fix, it can become a money pit real quick and you may end up tossing money in to a new ..whatever it is...only for things to begin to domino on you. I have heard reliable sources talk of 400,00 miles and beyond, but that is not the rule. But if you really want to peruse this, you have OBDI and need to do the CEL flash pattern diagnostic. It's not as good as OBDII but can point you in a direction to eliminate much guesswork. It sounds like it's gear hunting, adding a transmission issue to the mix. The idle and going 43 with no pressure on pedal, along with the other things you describe makes me think vacuum leak. I had a Camry CEL flash pattern chart just a day or 2 ago, I will find it.

Yep Chris, Thank You, your post was not there. Your answer give me some confidence in mine, vacuum leak. Will effect transmission possibly also.
