The expansion valve is going to be near the evaporator, inside the cabin, by it's very function the expanding gas, under compression from the condenser, expands and by laws of physics expanding gas gets cold, then goes in to evaporator for air flow to cool the air. It is not an easy thing, not DIY unless you know automotive A/C and also highly illegal to release refrigerant gas in to the air, it must be captured with the proper equipment.
